Understanding Misophonia
Misophonia is a condition in which certain everyday sounds—often quiet, repetitive ones—trigger strong emotional or physiological reactions. Unlike general sound sensitivity, misophonia is specific: chewing, tapping, breathing, rustling paper, or other repeated noises can cause intense annoyance, anger, or distress.
While many people find certain sounds irritating, those with misophonia experience reactions that go beyond irritation. The response can include feelings of panic, agitation, stress, or physical symptoms like increased heart rate. Over time, misophonia may affect daily life, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
At Sussex Audiology Centre, we recognise how challenging sound sensitivities like misophonia can be. We provide compassionate assessment and support, aiming to help you understand your condition and explore strategies to manage it more comfortably.
