Understanding the Levels of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can range from mild to profound, and understanding where you fall on that scale helps guide treatment and hearing aid options. Each level affects how you hear everyday sounds — from quiet conversations to traffic or music — in different ways.

At Sussex Audiology Centre, we use detailed hearing assessments to measure the degree of hearing loss and explain your results clearly, so you can make informed decisions about your hearing health.

Below is an overview of the main hearing loss levels and how they can affect daily life.

The Different Levels Explained

Hearing loss is measured in decibels (dB) and classified by how soft a sound must be before it can be heard. These levels indicate the degree of difficulty you may experience in daily listening situations.

  • Mild hearing loss (26–40 dB): Soft sounds and distant speech may be difficult to hear, especially in background noise.
  • Moderate hearing loss (41–55 dB): You may struggle to follow conversations at normal volume without visual cues or lip reading.
  • Moderately severe hearing loss (56–70 dB): Everyday speech becomes unclear, and group conversations are often challenging.
  • Severe hearing loss (71–90 dB): Only very loud sounds, such as shouting or traffic, may be heard clearly.
  • Profound hearing loss (91 dB+): Most sounds are inaudible, and hearing aids or cochlear implants are often required for communication.

Your hearing test results will show which level applies to you, helping us recommend the most suitable support or hearing aid technology.

How Hearing Loss Affects Daily Life

The impact of hearing loss depends not just on its level, but also on your lifestyle and listening needs. Even mild hearing changes can make social situations tiring or cause you to miss key sounds.

1. Everyday communication

Background noise in cafés, group conversations, or phone calls can become frustrating, especially with mild to moderate hearing loss.

2. Safety and awareness

Difficulty hearing alarms, traffic, or doorbells can affect confidence and independence in daily activities.

3. Emotional wellbeing

Untreated hearing loss can lead to social withdrawal, fatigue, or frustration. The right hearing support can restore clarity and connection.

“I’d like to start by thanking Rosanne for her expertise and service over the
years – the best hearing aids in the world are nothing without an expert
audiologist on hand to manage them.
December ‘24, I decided to upgrade my aids to Phonak Audéo I90-Sphere,
and the experience has been both amazing and quite emotional.
I am now able hear speech far more clearly, even in very noisy situations, as
never before – the “Spheric” program is unbelievably good. Birdsong is a joy,
and I can enjoy my music again but crucially, I am far more enthusiastic
about attending social occasions, family gatherings, meetings, the cinema
etc.
I’ve had them six months now and I’m still absolutely delighted. Many
thanks to Rosanne and Sussex Audiology Centre.”
