Understanding Misophonia

Misophonia is a condition in which certain everyday sounds—often quiet, repetitive ones—trigger strong emotional or physiological reactions. Unlike general sound sensitivity, misophonia is specific: chewing, tapping, breathing, rustling paper, or other repeated noises can cause intense annoyance, anger, or distress.

While many people find certain sounds irritating, those with misophonia experience reactions that go beyond irritation. The response can include feelings of panic, agitation, stress, or physical symptoms like increased heart rate. Over time, misophonia may affect daily life, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

At Sussex Audiology Centre, we recognise how challenging sound sensitivities like misophonia can be. We provide compassionate assessment and support, aiming to help you understand your condition and explore strategies to manage it more comfortably.

Misophonia Symptoms

Recognising the Symptoms of Misophonia

Misophonia is more than simply finding sounds irritating. People living with the condition experience strong emotional or physical reactions to specific noises, often those that others barely notice. These triggers can make everyday situations challenging and stressful.

Common examples include repetitive sounds such as chewing, breathing, tapping, clicking pens, or rustling. The response can range from discomfort and agitation to intense anger, panic, or the need to escape the situation.

Symptoms usually begin in late childhood or adolescence and may get worse if left unaddressed. For some, misophonia can impact relationships, concentration, and quality of life — which is why early recognition and support are so important.

Managing Misophonia

There is currently no single cure for misophonia, but there are effective strategies to help reduce its impact on daily life. Management focuses on recognising triggers, building coping techniques, and reducing the stress response to sounds.

Support may include sound therapy, counselling, or relaxation techniques to make triggers feel less overwhelming. In some cases, using background noise — such as music, white noise, or environmental sounds — can make difficult situations easier to manage.

Specialist audiologists and therapists can also provide guidance on practical strategies for work, study, and social settings. With the right support, many people find ways to lessen the emotional response and regain confidence in daily life.

At Sussex Audiology Centre, we provide understanding, tailored advice, and access to strategies designed to help you cope with misophonia in a more manageable way.

“I’d like to start by thanking Rosanne for her expertise and service over the
years – the best hearing aids in the world are nothing without an expert
audiologist on hand to manage them.
December ‘24, I decided to upgrade my aids to Phonak Audéo I90-Sphere,
and the experience has been both amazing and quite emotional.
I am now able hear speech far more clearly, even in very noisy situations, as
never before – the “Spheric” program is unbelievably good. Birdsong is a joy,
and I can enjoy my music again but crucially, I am far more enthusiastic
about attending social occasions, family gatherings, meetings, the cinema
etc.
I’ve had them six months now and I’m still absolutely delighted. Many
thanks to Rosanne and Sussex Audiology Centre.”
