What is Ear Popping?

Ear popping is the sensation of a sudden click, pop, or release of pressure in one or both ears. Many people notice it during swallowing, yawning, changes in altitude (such as flying or driving through hills), or when they have a cold.

While occasional popping is very common and usually harmless, frequent or persistent popping can be uncomfortable and may indicate an underlying ear or nasal issue.

What Causes Ear Popping?

The most common cause is a problem with the Eustachian tube — a small canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. Its job is to equalise pressure.

Pressure Changes

Changes in air pressure during flying, using lifts, or driving through hills can cause the ears to pop as they equalise.

Colds & Flu

Colds, flu, or sinus infections can cause congestion that affects Eustachian tube function and leads to popping.

Allergies

Allergies causing nasal congestion can block or restrict the Eustachian tubes, resulting in popping sensations.

Blocked Tubes

Blocked Eustachian tubes prevent proper pressure equalisation, causing clicking or popping sounds when they briefly open.

Earwax Build-up

Excess earwax can create pressure changes in the ear canal and contribute to popping sensations.

Fluid Behind Eardrum

Fluid accumulation in the middle ear can cause persistent popping or crackling, especially after infections.

Is Ear Popping a Problem?

Occasional popping is normal. However, you should seek advice if popping meets any of these criteria:

Seek Advice If:

  • Happens frequently or constantly
  • Is accompanied by pain, pressure, or fullness
  • Comes with hearing loss, ringing, or dizziness
  • Follows an ear infection or cold and doesn't resolve

When It's Usually Normal:

  • Happens occasionally during swallowing or yawning
  • Occurs during altitude changes (flying, hills)
  • Resolves quickly on its own
  • No pain or other symptoms present

What Can You Do About Ear Popping?

Self-Care Techniques

Simple self-care may help, including:

  • Swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum
  • Gentle pressure-equalising techniques
  • Managing allergies or nasal congestion
  • Staying hydrated to keep mucus thin

Professional Assessment

If symptoms persist, we can:

  • Examine ear health and eardrum movement
  • Check for wax blockage or fluid
  • Assess middle-ear pressure
  • Advise on treatment or onward referral if needed

I had a same day appointment yesterday at your Haywards Heath Centre.
I wanted to simply let you know that the staff, the centre and the whole experience and outcome were absolutely superb.
Your staff are a credit and the appointment was a huge success.
I have worked in health care for over 30 years and it is not always the case that things run smoothly and efficiently – this is certainly not the case with your organisation.
Simply thank you for sorting my problem out in a most professional way.
Please pass this on to your HR / patient relations staff.

Mark Whitaker, Haywards Heath

“I’d like to start by thanking Rosanne for her expertise and service over the
years – the best hearing aids in the world are nothing without an expert
audiologist on hand to manage them.
December ‘24, I decided to upgrade my aids to Phonak Audéo I90-Sphere,
and the experience has been both amazing and quite emotional.
I am now able hear speech far more clearly, even in very noisy situations, as
never before – the “Spheric” program is unbelievably good. Birdsong is a joy,
and I can enjoy my music again but crucially, I am far more enthusiastic
about attending social occasions, family gatherings, meetings, the cinema
etc.
I’ve had them six months now and I’m still absolutely delighted. Many
thanks to Rosanne and Sussex Audiology Centre.”
