Understanding Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is more common than many people realise, and it often develops gradually. In the early stages, the signs can be subtle – like asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, or needing to turn the TV up louder than others prefer.

Because these changes happen slowly, it’s easy to adapt without noticing the impact on daily life. Over time, however, untreated hearing loss can make communication harder, cause frustration, and even affect confidence and wellbeing.

The good news is that help is available. At Sussex Audiology Centre, we offer expert hearing assessments and personalised care to identify hearing loss early and provide solutions that keep you connected, confident, and in control of your hearing health.

Common Signs of Hearing Loss

Because hearing loss often develops gradually, it’s not always easy to spot at first. Many people only realise when everyday situations become more challenging. Recognising the signs early can make a big difference in getting the right help.

  • Difficulty following conversations: Especially in group situations or noisy environments such as restaurants or social gatherings.
  • Turning up the volume: Needing the TV, radio, or music louder than those around you prefer.
  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves: Or feeling like others are “mumbling” when they speak.
  • Struggling with phone calls: Finding it harder to hear clearly on the telephone.
  • Avoiding social situations: Withdrawing from conversations or activities because hearing feels too difficult or tiring.

If you recognise any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, a simple hearing test can provide clarity and reassurance.

Treating Hearing Loss

At Sussex Audiology Centre, we understand that hearing loss affects everyone differently. That’s why we offer a wide range of services designed to identify the cause, provide effective solutions, and support you in the long term.

Every appointment begins with a thorough hearing assessment, using advanced equipment to check your hearing across different frequencies. Your audiologist will explain the results clearly and answer any questions you may have.

If hearing aids are recommended, we’ll guide you through the latest options – from discreet, nearly invisible devices to advanced models with wireless connectivity. Each fitting is personalised, with ongoing adjustments to make sure your hearing aids are comfortable and effective.

In some cases, hearing difficulties are caused by something simple, such as a build-up of ear wax. We offer gentle and effective microsuction ear wax removal to restore clearer hearing straight away.

Our support doesn’t end once you leave the clinic. We provide follow-up care, advice for everyday listening situations, and regular check-ups to make sure your hearing health stays on track.

“I’d like to start by thanking Rosanne for her expertise and service over the
years – the best hearing aids in the world are nothing without an expert
audiologist on hand to manage them.
December ‘24, I decided to upgrade my aids to Phonak Audéo I90-Sphere,
and the experience has been both amazing and quite emotional.
I am now able hear speech far more clearly, even in very noisy situations, as
never before – the “Spheric” program is unbelievably good. Birdsong is a joy,
and I can enjoy my music again but crucially, I am far more enthusiastic
about attending social occasions, family gatherings, meetings, the cinema
etc.
I’ve had them six months now and I’m still absolutely delighted. Many
thanks to Rosanne and Sussex Audiology Centre.”

“Lovely and friendly. Helped me amazingly remove my wax buildup comfortably. And offered to clean my other ear free of charge as it was only ever so slightly blocked. Highly recommend visiting here for your ear troubles.”
