Hearing Aid Troubleshooting Guide

Find quick solutions to common hearing aid issues. Click on each section below to see detailed troubleshooting steps.

If your hearing aid isn't working here are some things to check:

  • Check for a blockage of wax either in the dome or in the wax guard
  • Make sure they are charged (if rechargeable)
  • Change batteries (if non-rechargeable)
  • Turn up the volume and listen for beeps
  • Change hearing aid programs to check you haven't accidentally gone into loop (if applicable)
  • If none of these work then there may be a fault within the hearing aids, please call us to make an appointment

If your hearing aids are not loud enough:

  • Check you haven't accidentally gone into any hearing aid programs (if you have any)
  • Check for wax in the domes or wax guards
  • Have you had your ears checked for wax?
  • When was your last test? Your hearing may have changed, contact us to schedule a hearing assessment

My hearing aids are whistling:

  • Have ears checked for a blockage of wax
  • Change your domes
  • Check hearing aids are inserted correctly

My hearing aids are tinny:

  • If your hearing aids are new this can be normal during the initial acclimatisation period of 2 weeks
  • Check volume hasn't been accidentally raised

Time to time, your hearing and hearing instruments might need a check up, if you are struggling with any of the listed concerns, our clinicians are here to help. Please call us to arrange an appointment where we can:

  • Examine your ears
  • Perform a new hearing test
  • Replace the hearing aid receivers
  • Change the domes
  • Check your hearing aids are working normally
  • Increase the volume on you hearing aids and/or clarity of speech
  • Run a test to ensure feedback is at a minimum

Should you have any of the below issues our staff will arrange for your hearing aid to be sent to the manufacturer for review:

  • If your hearing aid itself is faulty
  • If your hearing aid is only intermittently giving sound
  • If it's cracked or broken
  • If the Bluetooth has malfunctioned

Please call us and we will happily arrange for your hearing aid to be returned for inspection and/or repair. Please be aware there may be a cost to you.

I had a same day appointment yesterday at your Haywards Heath Centre.
I wanted to simply let you know that the staff, the centre and the whole experience and outcome were absolutely superb.
Your staff are a credit and the appointment was a huge success.
I have worked in health care for over 30 years and it is not always the case that things run smoothly and efficiently – this is certainly not the case with your organisation.
Simply thank you for sorting my problem out in a most professional way.
Please pass this on to your HR / patient relations staff.

Mark Whitaker, Haywards Heath

“I’d like to start by thanking Rosanne for her expertise and service over the
years – the best hearing aids in the world are nothing without an expert
audiologist on hand to manage them.
December ‘24, I decided to upgrade my aids to Phonak Audéo I90-Sphere,
and the experience has been both amazing and quite emotional.
I am now able hear speech far more clearly, even in very noisy situations, as
never before – the “Spheric” program is unbelievably good. Birdsong is a joy,
and I can enjoy my music again but crucially, I am far more enthusiastic
about attending social occasions, family gatherings, meetings, the cinema
etc.
I’ve had them six months now and I’m still absolutely delighted. Many
thanks to Rosanne and Sussex Audiology Centre.”

“Lovely and friendly. Helped me amazingly remove my wax buildup comfortably. And offered to clean my other ear free of charge as it was only ever so slightly blocked. Highly recommend visiting here for your ear troubles.”
